As the use of a croquet mallet revolves around the physique of an individual AND the handle, it’s very important you select a handle that suits your physique. There are no rules so the best way to find the most comfortable handle length for you is to play with your club mallets which have different handle lengths until you find the most comfortable length handle that suits you. You will know it when you find it.

    • Metal mallets certainly last longer and are usually less troublesome during their life.
    • Wooden mallets are usually less expensive and have been the ‘original mallet purchase’ for a long time until metal mallets became universally available in the past 20 years. Some countries promote wooden mallets for newcomers’, others metal. The trend is toward metal.
    • Two sized are more common – 9 ½” (24cm) or 11” (28cm) (give or take a little, as different manufacturers make slightly different sizes but still within those two size ranges)
    • Newcomers usually prefer the smaller 9 ½” (24cm) mallets because that is usually the size of the mallets for beginners in the club house.
      • It’s fair to say newcomers find the shorter length easier to use.
      • Because they are shorter, they seem to swing a little more easily for beginners.
    • “Club mallets” are usually about 3lbs. (1.361kg) and this is usually the weight of wooden mallets.
      • If you are considering a wooden mallet, contact the manufacturer to determine what other weights they have available.
    • Metal mallets come in a variety of weights – ranging from 2lbs (0.97kg) up to 3lbs 5ozs (1.503kg).
      • Their weights are very accurate and don’t vary with weather conditions.
    • The weight of your new mallet is important
      • Younger folks usually prefer mallets in the 3lb +. (1.361kg+ ) range.
      • People with wrist, arm, shoulder, upper or lower back problems or with Arthritis tend to prefer a lighter mallet in the range of 2lbs(0.97kg) up to 2 lbs 11ozs (1.219kg).
      • These specific weights are readily available in a range of metal mallets, and may be available in wooden mallets – but check with the manufacturer.
      • Older folks appreciate the lighter mallets as they are easier to carry on the court, hit just as well as the heavier mallets and are just as accurate.
